Chiropractic, the world’s foremost natural healthcare science, is rooted in history as far back as the ancient Greeks. But most significantly, in the late 1800s, the spine and nerve system were given specialized, intense research and study. Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer, tutored in his youth in the classics and health sciences, and later a teacher himself, was a man with an investigative nature whose intellect focused on the healing arts. After years of studying human health and disease, he formed a hypothesis and systematized the knowledge upon which the modern chiropractic science, art and philosophy are based. Chiropractic concerns itself with the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (primarily coordinated by the nervous system) of the human body and how that relationship affects the restoration and preservation of health. The basic premise of Palmer’s Philosophy of Chiropractic is
that life is intelligent. Additionally, the purpose of the body’s innate
intelligence is to maintain the body in a state of health and well-being. The
Palmer view of chiropractic is that the body is a dynamic, self-regulating and self-healing
As such, Palmer validates its orientation and focus on
health rather than an orientation based upon symptoms and disease. Central to
the Palmer philosophy is the removal of impediments to health through the
correction of subluxations, thus normalizing the nervous system and releasing
the body’s optimal potential.

What is a subluxation and how does it affect me?
In simplest terms, a subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral
Subluxation) is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move
out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal
nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your
spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to
malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.
How does this affect you? Your nervous system
controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with
the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper
nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate
abilities. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly.
It is the responsibility of the Doctor of
Chiropractic to locate subluxations, and reduce or correct them. This is done
through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to correct
the vertebral subluxations in your spine. Chiropractors are the only professionals
who undergo years of training to be the experts at correcting subluxations.
What is health
How do you define health? Is it feeling good? Is it not
having a cold? Or maybe it is something more. In Chiropractic, we have always
considered health to be something much more than not being sick, something more
than just pain free. The truth is,health speaks to a higher quality of life
itself. But do not take our word for it.
Here is a definition from the World Health Organization that
seems to approach the fullness of what we are speaking about in Chiropractic.
‘Health, is a state of complete physical, mental and
social well-being not merely the absence of disease or
